SCIENTIFIC TOURISM
There are several environments in Malargue for the study of science
with places which are an open book especially for Archaeology,
Palaeontology, Astro-Physics, Astronomy, Volcanic Science and
Speleology.
<<Within Archaeology there are great finds of aboriginal fossils,
arrow and spears ends and lithic rests of fireplaces from 7,000
years ago.
<< There have been great finds in Palaeontology over the last few
years: fossil rests of dinosaurs from the Jurassic and Cretacic
periods giving Malargue a place within the great world
deposit-fields. Amongst some of the parts found are: Ichthyosaurus
fossils (130 million years), carnivorous Abelisaurus (85 million
years), herbivorous Titanosaurus (85 million years).
<<In Physics, there is study of ultra energetic cosmic rays. In
Malargue there studies are carried out through the “Pierre Auger”
observatory.
The objective of this project is to determine the nature and
direction of the arrival of these cosmic rays with superior
energies. The aim is to better understand the Universe around us.
Elements used for detection are “hybrid” within a system of
telescopes with atmospheric fluorescence.
|
The area covered by these detectors is 3,000 square
kilometres with a total of 1,600 detectors with a distance
of 1.5 kilometres. This detector network is complemented
with high sensibility telescopes which, in clear sky nights
search into the atmosphere in order to observe the soft
ultraviolet light produced by cosmic rays cascades as they
pass through the air. |
 |
The observatory counts with a hall for receiving visitors and is
open from Mondays to Fridays at 17.00hs; the project plans to
install two observatories: one in the Southern Hemisphere in
Malargue and the other in the Northern Hemisphere in Utah, USA; for
the time being the Malargue observatory is the largest in the world
and has 250 scientists from 15 different countries working here.
<<Volcanic Science – Payunia and the possibility of studying and
appreciating all sorts of lava flows, explosions of different
magnitudes, volcanic bombs, sands, yardams, ashes and everything
else that the earth put out so as to amaze us.
<<Speleology or the study of caverns, has in Malargue three kinds of
circuits to cover and investigate: lava-formed caverns, plaster
caverns and cortical caverns, environments full of mystery and
beauty waiting to be discovered.
