WITCHES CAVERN
MALARGUE FORT
The fort is located 12 kilometers from Malargue City on the
right hand side margin of National Route 40 South and it is
a valuable historical monument. It is made of volcanic
“toba” stone typical of the times when it was built. It was
commissioned by Don Juan Troncoso. Besides the historical
attraction, the area is also good for climbing and rappel,
and can be enjoyed all year round.
CASCADAS DE MANQUI MALAL
Manqui Malal comes from two Mapuche voices: “manqué” which
is condor and “malal” meaning rocky wall. It is located 30
kilometers from Malargue and offers the possibility of doing
trekking, climbing and rappel at the foot of the Andes.
Besides this, it is a dazzling reservoir of marine fossils.
This place is hidden in the Cuesta del Chihuido in the Andes
Cordillera and is the meeting point for lovers of
mountaineering in Malargue District known as “the capital of
adventure tourism”. Within a 25 hectares radio there are
over 500 meters of “bardas” or, walls all of them over 40
meters high which makes them ideal for climbing or tirolesa.
Some people choose trekking and still others do rappel. The
cascade is of marine origin and falls 29 meters being fed by
nearby streams.
The Manqui Malal rocky formation originated during a process
of tectonic plates displacement of the earth’s crust which
took place in the Tertiary period. Both the short
mountainous walls which are part of the trekking circuit and
the high ones very much have the aspect of escarpments.
It is not unusual to find oysters and giant periwinkles
during one’s walks here and they are proof that the whole
area was under the sea.
